St Mawes has access to some of the best sailing waters in the UK and is the perfect place for any sailing enthusiast to visit. The St Mawes harbour and nearby boatyards offer moorings on a short-term or long term basis and secure anchorages are also available within the bay.
The St Mawes sailing club has been in existence since its inception in 1920 and shortly afterwards Frank Peters designed and built the first 'St Mawes One Design' (SMOD) named Eileen. Frank Peters family had been building boats at Freshwater Boatyard for over 200 years and were responsible for producing a large number of pilot gigs used around Cornwall and the Scilly Isles.
Today sees racing of a number of different types and classes of boats including Shrimpers, Ajax's, Marieholms, Sunbeams, lasers, and Falmouth working boats.
The St Mawes Sailing club is very active all year round and has very good facilities. The club house is located just near the village quay overlooking the bay and has a bar, televisions, a lounge, friendly staff and shower facilities. A good selection of charts are also available to browse through. The club quay, known as Stoneworks, is available to members for the storage of sailing dingys and tenders. The St Mawes sailing club also has a Junior section offering RYA sailing courses organised locally on Pico and Oppie sailing dingys.
Classic Sailing, owners and operators of Eve of St Mawes, offer sailing excursions and RYA courses not only on Eve but also other classic wooden ships and tall ships around the British Isles.
Facilities in St Mawes for the yacht and boat owner are very good. There are two boatyards, Freshwater boatyard and Percuil Boatyard, both offering good facilities, boat storage, and moorings. The local marine engineer is DL Marine based at St Just.
